COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
HOOK, LOG-GRAB (127 BY 203 MILLIMETERS)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description (CID) for all federal agencies.
1. SCOPE. This CID covers one type of 127 x 203 millimeters (mm) (5 by 8 inches (in)) steel log-grab hook, which is intended to facilitate towing and skidding logs.
2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
2.1 Materials. The hook shall be forged of one piece of steel, and from “H” classification steels with the required hardness and depth of hardness, conforming to ASTM A304. The forged hook shall be heat treated to a Rockwell “C” hardness of 30 plus or minus 2. The use of recovered material made in compliance with regulatory requirements is acceptable providing that all requirements of this CID are met (see 3.1).
2.2 Design and construction. The hook shall be formed to an angle of approximately 90 degrees with a wide throat opening (see figure 1). The hook shall have an eye and projection on one end, a spur on the heel, a plain point on the other end, and the eye shall be radiused around the outer edge to prevent cutting or damage to the wire rope (see figure 1).
